CORROSION RESISTANCE OF
METAL INJECTION MOLDED STAINLESS STEELS

METAL INJECTION MOLDING ABSTRACT

Metal Injection Molding Illustrative Photos

Types 316L and 17-4 PH stainless steel are frequently specified for metal injection molded (MIM) components, and their corrosion resistance is an important element of their popularity. With the porosity of metal injection molded material typically less that 5%, the corrosion resistance of metal injection molded stainless steels is expected to approach the levels achieved by similar wrought alloys. In this study, metal injection molded corrosion test specimens are processed from 316L, 316L Duplex, and 17-4 PH stainless steel alloys. Corrosion testing is performed per ASTM procedures for the following: boiling nitric acid, boiling ferric sulfate, ferric chloride, and salt spray (fog). The results demonstrated that MIM Stainless Steel have corrosion resistance equal or superior to the wrought Stainless Steel.
