MAGNETIC METAL INJECTION MOLDED PARTS
FOR DIESEL ENGINES
METAL INJECTION MOLDING ABSTRACT
New
fuel systems for diesel engines require soft magnetic
parts.
Their small size, complex shape, and quantities
have prompted a reevaluation of Metal Injection Molded
(MIM) parts for this application.
Past evaluation of the MIM Fe-3% Si parts had
inferior properties as compared to wrought parts.
Recent improvements in Metal Injection Molding processing and
continued pressure to decrease cost led to a new
evaluation of MIM Fe-3% Si parts.
A MIM fuel injector solenoid armature was
tested against a wrought armature.
The MIM Fe-3% Si armature properties compared
favorably to the wrought Fe-2.5% Si armature.
The conclusion was the Metal Injection Molded armature could
replace the wrought armature without compromising part
performance.
