SOFT MAGNETIC MIM
PARTS FOR DIESEL ENGINES
ABSTRACT
New fuel systems for diesel engines require soft
magnetic parts. Their small size, complex shape, and
quantities have prompted a reevaluation of Metal
Injection Molded (MIM) parts for this application. Past
evaluation of the MIM Fe-3% Si parts had inferior
properties as compared to wrought parts. Recent
improvements in MIM processing and continued pressure to
decrease cost led to a new evaluation of MIM Fe-3% Si
parts. A MIM fuel injector solenoid armature was tested
against a wrought armature. The MIM Fe-3% Si armature
properties compared favorably to the wrought Fe-2.5% Si
armature. The conclusion was the MIM armature could
replace the wrought armature without compromising part
performance.
SOFT MAGNETIC MATERIALS PPROCESSED BY METAL INJECTION MOLDING
ABSTRACT
Metal Injection Molding (MIM) has
become a widely used method for mass-producing small,
complex, near full density components. A strong market
for MIM components is soft magnetic alloys, as certain
MIM characteristics are well matched with preferred soft
magnetic material needs. This paper will discuss the
properties desired by users of soft magnetic materials,
the reasons why FloMets MIM process can deliver
superior product performance, and the results from
FloMets initial testing program of three different soft
magnetic alloys.
